MSC Opera Value trip to Russia

By Michael Needham

When I saw the deals available with no fly MSC Opera to the Baltic region I just had to book.  Being a single passenger can sometimes be a challenge to find a trip that is less than 150% single supplement however MSC very generously were offering a single with zero supplement, this meant that a 10 night trip on a single with an all-inclusive upgrade was under £1000!

Free National Express return coach to Southampton meant the trip got off to a seamless start!

Southampton – Amsterdam – Tallin – St Petersburg (2nts) – Copenhagen - Southampton

Opera is a lovely modern ship that feels fairly spacious.  The cabins are bright and cheerful. Biggest tip for Opera is to go for the Allegrissimo all inclusive which for £20.70 (per day) you can get:-

Unlimited wine by the glass (choice of 2 whites, 1 rosè, 2 reds, 2 sparkling wines - 1 dry and
1 sweet), draught beer, soft drinks, mineral water and a wide selection of drinks and cocktails from the bar, as well as take-away ice-cream in a cone or cup, coffees as well!

This deal meant I didn't need to worry about spending money on board the ship and saved me over £300!

The cruise experience on Opera was very much an international experience with about a dozen different nationalities aboard, but were mainly English, Italian, Dutch and German.  This meant that any announcements were repeated in the different languages and the theatre shows were mainly based on dance and illusion rather than West End type productions but I must say the shows were really entertaining!

Dining was very much Italian style with typical 7 course dinners which i'm ashamed to say I could usually manage to eat all the courses every night!  The pasta and risotto courses were the highlight dishes.

I had always wanted to visit Estonia and Russia and these were without a doubt highlights of the trip.  Tallin is a wonderful medieval city and the best thing to do here is to just explore the historic city on foot, stopping at some of the Russian influenced churches and many of the cities museums are worth visiting.

What can I say about St Petersburg apart from wow, wow and wow!

I've never seen such a rich volume of some of the world’s most stunning buildings.  The huge Hermitage museum is a must see as is the Palace of the Spilt Blood.  It’s just as well we had 2 days to explore this amazing city!  What’s good about visiting Russia by cruise is the fact when you book a shore excursion through me, the tourist visa is included without you needing to fill out paperwork or pay extra money!

Can’t wait for my next trip which is something totally different; Celebrity's immersive wine cruise in the Autumn!

Happy cruising and thanks for reading!
