St Lucia with Celebrity Cruises

By Simon O'Neill, Oasis Travel (Holywood Branch)

Oasis Travel Portfolio Suite Holywood’s, Simon O’Neill, travelled in style on a recent trip which included a Cruise to the Caribbean and taking in the Paradise Island of St Lucia as a stay option after the cruise.

Being a travel agent certainly has its perks and they don’t come much better than this – an 14 day trip of a lifetime to experience the luxury of Celebrity Cruises onboard their Millenium Class Ship, Celebrity Infinity.

I the twinned this with a Caribbean beach stay to take in the serenity and paradise of Saint Lucia and Capella Marigot Bay and Marina.

How did I get there?

I flew in 9 hours from the U.K with award winning Virgin Atlantic in Upper Class to Miami,  and then transferred on a connecting flight to the stunning Caribbean Island of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The lounge was amazing at Gatwick with breakfast served before I boarded, then on entering the aircraft. I was welcomed by crew with champagne. A 4 course sumptuous lunch followed with fine wines, then a turn down service to have a sleep in a lie flat bed.

Top tip:

Don’t forget an ESTA, is required for USA as well as Puerto Rico, being American Territory.

I had booked a 2C Catergory Veranda Stateroom for the week. The ports of call included: Barbados, Castries, St Lucia, St John’s, Antigua, Philipsburg, St Maarten and Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas.

Highlights of Summit:

Celebrity Summit sails with a new sense of style and excitement. She is the third member of Millennium Class that was "Solsticized," she's undergone a dazzling revitalization including the addition of AquaClass® staterooms and the popular restaurant, Blu, exclusively for AquaClass guests

With being in a verandah stateroom, I could not avail of Blu, but I spoke with other guests who said it was wonderful.

Dining Options:

Qsine was my favourite specialty restaurant, it features a uniquely unordinary approach to dining.. Bistro on Five had everything from crepes, paninis, and salads, to desserts.

Cafe al Bacio and Gelateria was a European-style cafe offering Lavazza coffee, freshly baked pastries, and specialty gelato or ice cream!

Ocean Cafe/Ocean Grill, I liked this casual dining area which included a pasta bar, freshly made pizza, grilled steak, hamburgers and much more.

Celebrity iLounge

This was great, a kind of a trendy type Internet lounge that is the first Authorized Apple Reseller at Sea. Celebrity iLounge also offers various iLearn classes to help you master the latest photography, video and audio skills.

Bars & Lounges

Martini Bar & Crush ice-topped bar, had talented bartenders put on a high-energy show preparing an intriguing menu of classic and contemporary martinis. This was so much fun and Michael's Club, was a  plush social club that felt like a sophisticated hangout. It is known for its extensive collection of fine whiskeys, scotches, cognacs, and bourbons and was further enhanced with a large selection of craft beers, freshly made snacks, sporting events on flat-screen TVs, and live musical performances.

Cellar Masters, offers you the opportunity to try a collection of both familiar and unknown wines from around the world. Cosmos Lounge, enjoys spectacular views from the observation lounge, Cosmos, where you can also dance under glowing lights in the evening disco.

Then of course on top of all of this we had the main Broadway Theatre Style shows in the Main Theatre.

Then of course there was lazing by one of the many pools and relaxing and rejuvenating in the serene spa at sea. One can experience the unique services of Canyon Ranch in a breathtaking setting aboard Summit. You can enhance your cruise with a complete wellness and lifestyle program that helps you feel rejuvenated.

Time to say goodbye to Summit and catch a 1 hour flight to Saint Lucia from San Juan.

Now onto my visit to Paradise.

I stayed at the Capella Marigot Bay Resort and Marina. Capella Marigot Bay is very much for sun seekers who desire luxury and tranquility in a paradise setting.

My Capella Personal Assistants were Carina and Monty  and they are at your service and ready to arrange anything you’d like to do on the island, from hiking the Pitons to a less strenuous shopping trip. I loved the funky designer furniture around the pretty three-tiered pool, and the ceviche at the new poolside Brut Bar is to die for. There’s a refreshing focus at the Hotel Restaurants on the culture and cuisine of the island, with some delicious local dishes on the menu and an extensive programme of excursions designed to show you the real Saint Lucia. The Capella Personal Assistants rang me one week before I arrived to make sure everything was as you would expect at a 5 star resort.

James A. Michener once described Marigot Bay as “the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean”, and it’s a fitting backdrop for this stylish, contemporary resort, which has recently been transformed by a multi-million dollar refurbishment. With elegant accommodation, superb fine dining and a world class spa, not to mention the buzzing bars and chic boutiques of the revamped marina, you’ll have everything you need for an unforgettable stay.

How did I get there?

I was greeted on arrival by the hotel and transferred 45 minutes by private air conditioned car to Capella Marigot Bay.

Everyone I encountered in Capella Marigot Bay and indeed the Island in general, were very hospitable and nothing was too much trouble. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking.

I have definitely returned home from one of the best Hotels I have ever stayed in and one of the best Caribbean Islands with memories that will last a lifetime.

St Lucia is a year round destination and has a five hour time difference from the UK.

Some recommended trips are:

Whale watching and Dolphin spotting
Castries Market
St Lucia Catamaran day sail taking in the famous Pitons
Aerial Tram and Zipline Canopy Tour over the rainforest
Drive in Volcano at Sulphur Springs
Island Tour and Sunset Cruise

Recently renovated and under new management, I was delighted to be able stay at this fabulous Hotel.
